But Ilya's alright, isn't it? | | | | 09-11-2007, 01:25 AM | #74 (permalink) | | ▲ that guy ▲ Join Date: Jun 2007 Location: In this thread Posts: 1,124 | Yeah sure, but it highly depends on the patronymic/surname. | | | 09-11-2007, 02:35 AM | #75 (permalink) | Posts: n/a | Oh yes, of course. And yeah, Ilya looks better than Ylya. Make sure you tell people how it's pronounced, though, as I'm not sure everyone will get it right off the bat. | | | 09-11-2007, 06:09 AM | #78 (permalink) | | ▲ that guy ▲ Join Date: Jun 2007 Location: In this thread Posts: 1,124 | It does look a lot better, but that's because it's Anglicized in a form that is more communicative. That said, it's generally a bad idea to figure the name first before the entire background. For example, if your character has quirky parents and give her a quirky name, the conditions and environment of her upbringing are likely to be tremendously different than if someone gave you a decidedly religious or formal name. It's all nature vs nurture here. | | | 09-12-2007, 01:35 PM | #79 (permalink) | Posts: n/a | I do realize that competence has been hard to come by for this organization, which is why, I'm sure, you two are practically shoving each other out of the way to tell me how to do things. This isn't the first time I've created a character, though, so I actually know what I'm doing. Don't worry! It won't have been done in the conventional way, but the end result should be just as satisfactory. | | | | 09-12-2007, 02:31 PM | #80 (permalink) | | ▲ that guy ▲ Join Date: Jun 2007 Location: In this thread Posts: 1,124 | Quote: Originally Posted by Aqueous Blue I do realize that competence has been hard to come by for this organization | Unfortunate, isn't it?
