Joanne Rowling, who writes under the name J K Rowling. Bloomsbury Publishing, the British publishers who first published the Harry Potter books, initially wanted Rowling to disguise the fact that she was a woman, fearing it may dissuade boys from buying the books.
To comply with Bloomsbury's request that she use two initials, Rowling picked 'K' as the middle initial to use in her nom de plume. In reality, she has no middle name.
